Add Expand/Maximize Option to the RESTful Service Handler Source Editor

Idea Summary
When developing REST APIs in Oracle APEX, the Source editor for a RESTful Service Handler provides a relatively small editing area. As the PL/SQL code becomes longer, developers need to scroll extensively within the page, which makes coding, reviewing, and debugging more difficult.

I suggest adding an Expand/Maximize option to the Source editor, allowing developers to temporarily enlarge the code editing area or open it in a full-screen mode.

This would provide a better development experience while preserving the existing APEX interface when the expanded mode is not required

Use Case
A developer is creating a RESTful Service Handler using PL/SQL. The handler contains validation logic, JSON processing, database operations, exception handling, and response generation.

As the code grows, the Source editor becomes difficult to work with because only a small portion of the code is visible at a time. The developer must repeatedly scroll up and down between the Source editor and other sections of the Handler configuration.

For example, a REST Handler may contain 100+ lines of PL/SQL code. Being able to maximize the Source editor would allow the developer to work with the complete code more comfortably, similar to the experience provided by modern code editors.

This would be particularly useful when:

  • Writing longer PL/SQL REST handlers.
  • Reviewing or debugging existing handlers.
  • Working with JSON parsing and response generation.
  • Comparing different sections of a handler.
  • Copying or refactoring larger blocks of code.
  • Using multiple monitors or large-screen development environments.

Preferred Solution (Optional)

Add an Expand/Maximize icon to the top-right corner of the RESTful Service Handler Source editor.

When clicked, the editor could expand to occupy most or all of the available browser window.

For example:

Normal mode

+------------------------------------------+
Source                              [↗]
+------------------------------------------+
DECLARE
    ...

    ...
+------------------------------------------+

Maximized mode

+----------------------------------------------------------+
Source                                           [↙]
+----------------------------------------------------------+

DECLARE
    l_body CLOB;
    l_response CLOB;

BEGIN
    ...

    -- Complete REST Handler code
    ...

EXCEPTION
    ...
END;

+----------------------------------------------------------+

Ideally, the expanded editor would support the featurest Source editor, including syntax highlighting, line numbers, code completion, formatting, and other existing editor capabilities.

A full-screen mode, similar to the experience provided by modern IDEs and code editors, would be an excellent enhancement to the Oracle APEX development experience.

We reviewed this idea carefully and came to the conclusion that it does not constitute an appropriate APEX feature request.

    APEX 26.2 has the RESTful services UI removed. Going forward, use SQL Developer/Web, Database actions or scripts to manage them.
