Idea Summary
Interactive Reports allow users to define multiple Control Break columns, but APEX renders the resulting break header as one continuous text string, for example:
Test Scenario: Data Manager, Case Id: 8710, Requirement: ..., Full Description: ...
When several fields are involved, especially fields containing long text, the break header becomes difficult to read.
APEX should provide declarative formatting options for Control Break headers, such as:
- Display each control-break field on a separate line
- Bold or otherwise style the column label independently from the value
- Allow configurable separators between control-break fields
- Allow a compact horizontal layout or a vertical label/value layout
- Preserve the formatting dynamically when end users add, remove, or reorder Control Break columns through the Interactive Report Actions menu
The formatting should be driven by the current report configuration rather than requiring developer-written JavaScript for specific column names.
Use Case
A user may create several Control Breaks dynamically in an Interactive Report. For example:
- Test Scenario
- Case ID
- Requirement
- Full Description
Today these values are concatenated into a single break heading. With long values, the result becomes visually dense and difficult to scan.
A developer can manipulate the rendered HTML with JavaScript, but that solution depends on knowing the specific columns in advance. It no longer works correctly if an end user changes the Control Break configuration.
This is particularly important because Interactive Reports are designed to let end users customize reports themselves. The presentation of Control Breaks should therefore adapt automatically to the user's selected columns.
Preferred Solution
Add a Control Break Formatting section to Interactive Report attributes with options such as:
Layout
Horizontal
Vertical
Custom
Label Style
Normal
Bold
Separator
Comma
Pipe
Line Break
Custom
Show Column Label
Yes / No
For a vertical layout, APEX could render:
Test Scenario: Data Manager
Case ID: 8710
Requirement: To assess and optimize...
Full Description: Data Manager Screen Loading Duration...
This would make Control Breaks much more readable while continuing to support the dynamic, end-user configurable nature of Interactive Reports.
