APEX mail settings on application/workspace level

Idea Summary
All mail settings, e.g. hosts/ports, username/password, from smtp address should be also configurable on workspace and/or application level

Use Case
At the moment you can only specify general email setting in instance level.
If you have to use different mail settings from app to app or from workspace to workspace, it's not possible to achieve this at the moment.

We have the need of mail settings in workspace and/or app level due to a completed migration to authenticated SMTP, where it is not possible to use a different sender address as of the mailbox defined at instance level.
As we have large databases with a lot of different workspaces and application, one centralized configured mailbox does not fit to the need, that there should be different one for specific workspaces or apps.

Preferred Solution (Optional)
Provide a three level email setting structure at instance, workspace and app level.
Or at least at instance and workspace level.

This is planned for a future APEX release.

    Good idea.

Understandable, but that leads to another problem. Normally the mail setting should not be the same in dev/test/prod environments, so tying it to the application level would defeat the purpose of haing independent mail settings.

Hi Vincent, why do you close the idea so quickly? :-(

This is a real big issue for many users in the Bosch Group.
We have completely switched to authenticated mailing and can only use the one dedicated sender address of the mailbox that is stored in the instance.
And we have many cases where it is not enough to store one mail account per APEX instance, as one instance is used by various apps with various mail accounts.

How about a tiered model in which the default mail settings remain at instance level, but the developer can still decide to overwrite them with settings at app level. If they do this, they are responsible for it themselves.

@vincent morneau I agree but, as for web credentials or remote servers, it could be configured at the workspace level

  • jens.kaschuba OP 8 months ago

Workspace level would also help, the best would be all three levels … instance …workspace and app

  • vincent morneau Admin OP 8 months ago

@roberto.capancioni that's something completely different, and something we can consider.

I recommend editing this idea with a more comprehensive picture of the migration concerns. Or creating a new idea. Then we can reevaluate.

  • jens.kaschuba OP 8 months ago

@vincent morneau Can you reopen this idea?

  • vincent morneau Admin OP 8 months ago

I can reopen it, but this idea as is, has been rejected and will likely be rejected again. If you'd like to reframe the idea details that considers migrations concerns, it would help the likelihood of moving to roadmap.

@vincent morneau I have edited the idea in hope that the need is now clearer

@vincent morneau Ok New Idea: FR-4077 - APEX mail settings on workspace level

  • vincent morneau Admin OP 8 months ago

@roberto.capancioni hopefully the new idea doesn't conflict with the current idea which @jens.kaschuba edited. We will triage both soon.
