Oracle Forms to APEX migration Assistant - using GenAI

dor.sela Internal
· Nov 26 2024

Idea Summary
there are many Oracle Forms customers globally that just dying to keep using oracle technology but end up waiting to the forms to die due to complexity and costs of these migration projects. Other options they take is modernizing to other technologies and drift away from Oracle.
We have several pending F2A opportunities that really won't happen in the classic way of functional design, code migration and rebuilding in APEX. All current Partner automation solution are code based and cumbersome. vey costly. we are talking about 1000-1500 forms for each system.

I recommend to seriously consider this as it would boost APEX presense in critical systems and strategic customers  (As once forms was)

Use Case
Any forms to Apex modernization project - small to large

Preferred Solution (Optional)
Forms to APEX migration Assistant - using GenAI.

Maybe loading the FMB files and PLLs and actual forms screen shots explaining functionality of the forms or the business process in the forms

Even explaining the schema and DB objects to the LLM for it to make sure it relates to objects.

Even a 60% auto migration is super effective here.

Partners could then build their solutions for automation on top of that feature.

We reviewed this idea carefully, and while it was interesting, we concluded that due to all the internal implications we need to take into account, it is not feasible in APEX.

I'm not exactly sure how we can action this. Surely an LLM can provide guidance for the migration, but APEX wouldn't own the migration and therefore couldn't be responsible for it.

I don't think that a Forms-to-APEX migration function should be part of APEX. APEX must concentrate on further development. What I could imagine, however, are areas that today (unnecessarily) complicate a Forms migration to APEX and possibly create too much manual intervention. This is where APEX development could be helpful with appropriate functions.
I clearly agree with dor.sela that many Forms applications worldwide are ripe for migration to APEX and that Oracle could lose these customers because it is afraid to make a clear announcement about which technology will replace Forms.
The tool that dor.sela would like to have already exists and has already brought many Forms applications into the modern age. The PITSS.CON toolset from PITSS Gmbh/PITSS LLC. Combined with stringent project management and experts who are proficient in Forms and APEX, this guarantees success.
    It's already there!
