Easy Customized Reports for Printing on paper

unsbaloach Public
· Aug 19 2021

Idea Summary
There should be features / options for creating customized reports for printing on paper purpose and may be printed directly or create PDF files and have options of generating files in batches. E.g. Receipts, bills etc.

Although there are lenghty processes for that i guess but there should be easy built-in tools.

Use Case

  1. Lets say I want to create app for Point of Sell POS, for which i need to make receipts for printing purpose.
  2. Suppose I want app which only requires to print reports in different styles on paper.

Preferred Solution (Optional)
It can be implemented by using Oracle Reports or Apex Office Print AOP tool which should be integrated in apex for that purpose.

By this, reports can easily be printed and saved in PDF format in customzied way.

This is currently on the roadmap for a future release of Oracle APEX.

    Need this solution

Similar feature is already there: Email Templates. These two can be merged into a configurable functionality.

Printing feature is must for application.

Another possibility would be to use the JasperReports integration from Dietmar Aust.

This kind of solution is need in almost all applications made. You always run into the need for doing pdf printout.

AOP and MAXAPEX have done it, why is Oracle not doing it?

Where we like to talk so often about not reinventing the wheel...and as i asked in a chat during a web session some time ago: How expensive can AOP be ? Well, take it as a joke, but think about it...

REPORT'S AND PRINTS ARE THE MAJOR PART OF APPLICATION WHY APEX NOT IMPLEMENTING IN COMING RELEASE'S ?

OK WE BUILD THE APP IN APEX.. AND HOW TO SATISFY THE CLIENT WITHOUT PRINTS AND REPORTS ?

BIG NEAGTIVE POINT OF ORACLE APEX. IT SHOULD BE ADDED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

In my mind, APEX is a great tool for many things.  But if I have to name one weakness, it is in the physical printing department.  Our client is evaluating low code platform and appian.com seems to have an edge in this regards.  As much as I like APEX, can't push for the solution if it does not require the purchase or BI Publisher tool or any other third party tools to generate high fidelity print out easily.  There are many use cases where paper copy of forms or PDF files are needed to be generated.  So having a more robust printing solution built in will be a great selling point.

Don't get me wrong, APEX is great and I love what the team does and you can't argue for the price.  But if there is an area of improvement, this will be my vote.  Either way, thanks for creating such a great tool!

I realise any answer to this question would be subject to Oracle's infamous Safe Harbour statement, but as this is on the roadmap, how far in the future is this feature on that roadmap ?

Every project I work on needs this feature in some form or another & we end up with multiple solutions depending on how much the client is prepared to spend (for AOP, PL/PDF, JRXML2PDF etc).

Would be good to be able to use something built in as many projects are small in size and budget and come with privacy concerns that rule out a cloud based printing solution.

It sounds good and it's most need feature. My organisation is delaying the project because of the same reason, so it would be nice to integrate such functionality at the earliest,

This and reporting in general is a HUGE need for APEX.  Should not have to rely on third party tools for reporting functinality.

Enterprise customers still demand for this native printing capabilities inside Oracle APEX, as the applications are being developed for major business processes.

Already the option to download Interactive Reports as PDF is available, and also report templates can be maintained in Report Layouts. Bringing into PDF generation function, will be more beneficial to resolve business problem for large. This can also take care of generating secure reports without external dependencies.
