IR/IG dialogs should be consistent

ino.laurensse Public
· Aug 19 2021

Idea Summary
IG and IR have different options when using Actions → Filter. From the user point of view, they should be the same.

Use Case
End users do not understand the difference between IR and IG.

Preferred Solution (Optional)
IG filter has a great option to create a multiple line filter before clicking Save to apply the filter. An IR filter can only add one line at a time, with a (long running) search every time you added one line. The IG way is the preferred way.

IG does not have the Row filter option, like IR. The Row filter should be available in IG too.

The Filter box in IG does not search for a value in NUMBER columns. IR does, which is the preferred option.

Etc.?

Great idea! This is something that we have discussed and we have on our roadmap to improve the consistency between the dialogs across Interactive Grid and Interactive Report.

I would say, IR and IG have to be merged. Actually, their functions coincide on 50 - 70%. They both have action menu, but some functions exist in both reports, some - only in IR, some - only in IG. IR has BLOB column type, while IG does not have it. IG in read-only mode is almost the same as IR, etc.

Dear APEX TEAM, is there a timeline, a roadmap or at least some vague theoretical guess as to when this feature might be introduced? I also asked a question in the discussion forum:

    https://community.oracle.com/tech/developers/discussion/4494281/yet-another-question-about-complex-ig-filter-to-the-apex-team-roadmap

  • john.snyders APEX Team OP 3.5 years ago

It is not just about the dialogs there are differences in filter functionality. Yes they should work the same. As in the preferred solution it is a mix/merge of IG/IR that is desired it isn't that one or the other is perfect.

Our eyes are on these types of requests, and we can assure everyone that we are working hard to prioritize such efforts as best as we can. Changes and improvements as suggested here can take a lot of time to develop and QA, so we cannot predict when it'll become a reality.

IG row filter would allow to define an OR-condition.

  • tdoberman OP 3 years ago

Instead of one correct report/grid, there are three....

  • ravi_a OP 3 years ago

It will be very useful if Interactive Grid row filter has the same option to add filter expression - just like the row filter of Interactive reports. This will allow the end users to add row filter in the interactive grid and add expressions - like to compare 2  or more column values.

  • brian.d.hill OP 2.7 years ago

Yes!  i've been keeping a list of differences between IR and IG.  in my mind, an IR should essentially be a read-only IG.

  • tdoberman OP 2.7 years ago

IG should have breaking headers and a version with vertical headers for selected columns.

  • jkerr OP 1.3 years ago

Why are IG and IR separate offerings when there is so much similarity?  Why not merge them together keeping the overall set of functionalities?  Great for users and developers

  • jayson hanes Admin OP 1.3 years ago

@jkerr it has to be this way to support older apps without them having to be updated - doing as you suggest would break older apps

  • john.snyders APEX Team OP 1.3 years ago

@jkerr While I agree that there are many things that ought to be made consistent in functionality and UI there are some fundamental differences that cannot be “merged”.

    1. IG is client side rendered and IR is server side rendered. This is a bigger deal than it may seem at first.
    2. For the main view, IG is a grid and IR is a table. Many people have very string feelings about one or the other being critically important for a given use case.
  • jkerr OP 1.3 years ago

Thanks, that makes more sense with your explanation

  • pjones_dev OP 1.3 years ago

@jayson hanes Whilst I understand the reasons the two won't be merged, and also wouldn't want them to be either for the reasons @john.snyders described, just to play devil's advocate isn't that what the ‘Compatibility Mode’ setting should be for, so if they were ‘merged’ then older apps would still be supported without them having to be updated, they'd just have to remain on the older compatibility mode setting.

We reviewed this idea carefully, and while it was interesting, we concluded that due to all the internal implications we need to take into account, it is unlikely to make its way into APEX.

Very disappointing for many developers and users. I don't understand why the APEX team focusses so much on new features and not on improving current features.

  • vincent morneau Admin OP 9 months ago

I completely understand your sentiment. It's a balancing act. This feature, while important, requires a significant effort and it has been decided that it can't be prioritized it right now. We are updating the status now for transparency.

  • vzitko OP 9 months ago

IR/IG functionality is not improved for several years (neither Oracle internally nor according to APEX ideas). Does your diplomatic answer mean that this will not happen in APEX 24.2 or APEX 25.1?

  • vincent morneau Admin OP 9 months ago

That is correct, instead of leaving this ticket in the roadmap status with no immediate plans to action, we opted for transparency and to close this idea for now. APEX is still committed to improving those core components. The dialog consistency just happen not to be at the top of the list right now.

  • vzitko OP 9 months ago

Vincent, to understand your answer correctly. In APEX 24.2 and APEX 25.1, there will be no extensions and modifications related to APEX ideas regarding IR and IG? I mean these APEX ideas with status "on roadmap"

  • vincent morneau Admin OP 9 months ago

I'm not commenting on other ideas. I'm also not commenting on future APEX releases. I'm only saying that out of transparency for this one current idea, it's not being prioritized right now.

  • nikola.velinov OP 9 months ago

After 7 years of waiting (see oldest discussions in my post above), we at least finally have the certainty that this idea will not be implemented soon. Good to know - that's also valuable, thank you for this transparency!

Nevertheless, I would like to point out that the IG is still an extremely powerful widget that does not have many equivalents on other competitor platforms.
