API for executing apex advisor, CI / CD integration

· Sep 8 2021

Idea Summary
It would be nice having a supported API for executing apex advisor progmatically for integrating it with CI / CD pipelines. There are ways to do it but not officialy, and is undocumented.

Use Case
Improve apex aplications quality by executing apex advisor verifications progmatically on external automated CI / CD pipelines.

Preferred Solution (Optional)
APEX_ADVISOR api in order to check and validate all or selected verifications.

We reviewed this idea carefully, and while it was interesting, we concluded that it is unlikely to make its way into APEX in the foreseeable future.

We have over 100 APEX Stacks with more than 150 Apps running on it.

With this feature we would be able to easily generate centralized quality reports over our stacks.

    Great idea!!!

Apex 26.1 now provides a proper way to validate ApexLang issues, but I really miss being able to execute apex advisor within plsql with an official API.

+1. Another use case: AI coding agents.

We govern a citizen development platform on APEX and use AI agents to help review and fix apps. They can read the metadata through the APEX views, but they can’t run the Advisor, and the Advisor is what tells them what to fix.

We’d need a supported API (e.g. APEX_ADVISOR) that returns structured results (check, severity, component, page, message) and can be called from PL/SQL, SQLcl or REST.

Maybe look @ APEX_SERT to see if it can automate some of your ideas.. Advisor is hit or miss to be honest..

I'm doubtful that this will get built since APEX 26.2 release notes marked APEX Advisor as deprecated: https://docs.oracle.com/en/database/oracle/apex/26.2/htmrn/deprecated-features.html#GUID-2B6A6535-BC30-4FD5-A994-7D4E1675438D

The release notes are recommending to use CODESCAN from SQLcl 26.3+
